SETAREH POURRAJABI

About the Artist

Setareh Pourrajabi is an Iranian expressionist artist who studies how the modern world’s conflicts and contradictions manifest in different women’s roles. She’s interested in how a woman might switch back and forth between her roles of daughter, mother, wife, etc. and movement within identity and being.

Pourrajabi works to capture the qualities and beauty that she sees as the result of wandering in and around the empty space of these roles. She is influenced by German philosopher Hegel and his belief that the purpose of dialectics is to study things in their own being and movements and thus demonstrate the finitude of the partial categories of understanding transition from quantity to quality, which he terms the measure. Harmony of ambiguities and converses inside of us.

Pourrajabi’s work is deeply personal. She is from Tehran, Iran and has experienced a world in which women are most commonly second in society compared to their male counterparts and live with extensive discrimination and oppression.
