In tandem with the 50th anniversary of Touchstone Gallery, Ain’t No Place: History and Legacy in the Black Community explores how Black artists in the DC-area interpret the feeling of home, centering their memories and experiences within the Black community. Presenting a myriad of ways community is cultivated and preserved for future generations, Ain’t No Place builds upon the Ghanaian principle of Sankofa; looking to the past to build the future.
This exhibition portrays the collective memory through personal histories, examining the complexities of heritage and identity to show the breadth of narratives within a shared culture. Ain’t No Place pays homage to our ancestors, our shared future, and ourselves.
Featuring eight artists, this exhibition showcases a range of techniques, imagery, and messaging that encapsulates what it means to be home. Artists Janathel Shaw, Paula Mans, Sheldon Scott, Blu Murphy, Neville Barbour, Jermaine “jET” Carter, Autumn Spears, and Brittany Mona’ engage in compelling dialogue through their unique styles and approach to storytelling.
A Touchstone Foundation for the Arts exhibition curated by Charmaine-Seymone.
