Gale Wallar: Parallelismus

  • Touchstone Gallery 901 New York Avenue NW Washington D.C 20001 United States (map)

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 24 from 4-7 pm

Meet the Artist Open House: Sunday, November 22 from 1-3 pm

The work in this exhibition by Gale Wallar reflects parallelismus, using formal organizational principles (contrast, repetition, emphasis, proportion, and balance) and sensory elements (color, line, value, mass, and space). It emphasizes the symmetrical alignments found in nature that provide order in a chaotic world.

The Swiss artist Ferdinand Hodler defined parallelismus as a visual philosophy: a process of simplification, balance and repetition found in nature; the fundamental order of the universe.

For Wallar, the mountain landscapes are visually compelling and have a spiritual appeal. Defined shapes are a strong element but in many images the use of cool color and gradations in the sky treatments create a softer and more atmospheric mood. The mix of larger acrylic on canvas and smaller oil on panel pieces emphasize the organizational principles of structure and harmony.
