Gallery Reception: Sunday, June 15 from 3-6 pm
Dee Levinson has a profound fascination with Ancient Egypt, a passion that inspired Egypt Revisited, her second solo exhibition at Touchstone Gallery exploring the temples, statuary, and rich visual legacy of the ancient civilization.
This solo exhibition features 17 oil paintings and 3 colored pencil drawings, all based on photographs Levinson captured during her many visits to Egypt. The works depict iconic sites such as the monumental temples of Abu Simbel, honoring Pharaoh Ramses II and his chief wife Nefertari, as well as depictions from the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, including portrayals of mummies.
Rather than striving for color realism, Levinson draws primarily from sculpture, allowing form and texture to guide her interpretation. Her oil paintings are created using a double split complementary limited palette, layered to reveal glimpses of underlying hues and add depth. While her love of drawing remains foundational to her practice, she relies on the saturated colors of oil paint to fully realize her visual impact.
