“The ladderlike lines in this painting symbolize the opportunity to climb above challenges brought about by inequity. Some ladders are missing a side or have broken, faded or no rungs at all, underscoring that the tools to lift people up are imperfect, but we can climb around the compromised sections and move from one ladder to another to rise up. The ladders are different colors and start and stop in different places, serving as reminders that we each have a unique background and journey, and that we all need a stable infrastructure and the support of others to achieve our goals.”
