“This painting is of Marian Anderson, the famous opera singer who in 1939 was courageously sang "My Country Tis of Thee" on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial after first being barred by DAR from singing at Constitution Hall because she was Black. In her performance that day, in front of the largest crowd she ever stood before, she sang and poignantly changed the words from "of thee I sing" to "to thee we sing."
