Awake

I drifted for days 

through sagebrush hills and flats, 

a stretch of mixed grasses 

thorns on the pathway 

I searched 

a broad rocky hill 

for butterfly lands 

but I missed the largest lizard 

was too late for Audubon’s bighorn 

when we’re awake, we see 

the perpetual radiance of the world 

with fluidity and wisdom 

with proficient understanding

and with love

this is my koan
