“Called mermaids’ purses by some, devil’s pocketbooks are the egg cases of the skate, a large, non-bony fish related to the sting ray. At certain times of the year beach visitors can see them tossing and turning in the surf as they wash ashore. Unrelated factoid: once dried in the sand they were my dog’s favorite beach snack.”
