“This painting should have been called The Prodigal Picture. When I was compiling an inventory for the show, an image of this painting popped up on my computer. While I was confident that it was my work, I did not remember it. Nevertheless, into the show it would go. If only I could find it. I will spare you the details, but after a long search and several re-searches, I found it in a most unlikely place. I sealed it, set it aside to dry and lost it again. At the last minute, it reappeared, and I promptly framed it and chained it to the box of small works already packed for the show.  Somewhere in the process of finding and losing it, I remembered that it was inspired by a lecture by Scott Conary, a Portland, Oregon artist who, among other things, paints exquisite small portraits of everyday objects. Not that such a beautiful shell is an everyday object. It is a gift from the sea.”
