50 for 50: Jayne Gaskins

  • Touchstone Gallery 901 New York Avenue NW Washington D.C 20001 United States (map)

Jayne Gaskins’s art reflects her response to the world around her, expressed through a form of realism that is both subjective and expressionistic. She works primarily with fiber, drawn to its tactile qualities and remarkable versatility. The medium can be shaped into nearly any form, creating surfaces that are soft and inviting or intense and reflective, much like the emotions that inform her work.

Gaskins’s practice is deeply personal and intimate. Her compositions feature hard edges and intense colors that mirror the strength and complexity of human feelings. She welcomes viewers to bring their own perspectives to her work, recognizing that emotional responses are inherently individual. For Gaskins, a work is successful if it inspires viewers to embark on their own introspective journeys, just as creating the work has led her through one of her own. Her artistic journey remains ongoing.

50 for 50 is an artist opportunity that invites 50 community artists to showcase their work at Touchstone throughout 2026, the year of Touchstone’s 50th anniversary.

Jayne Gaskins’ work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the US, Europe, Asia, and Australia and has earned numerous awards for excellence. Her art is in both private and museum collections and has been shown in prestigious exhibits such as Xe Triennale Internationale des Mini-Textiles (France), Quilt National, and FiberArt International. It has also been published in books such as Exploring Art Quilts, Vol 2, where it appeared on the cover accompanied by a feature article as well as Art Quilts Unfolding – 50 Years of Innovation, and The Natural World: Profiles of Major Artists Galleries.

Gaskins holds a BFA in Graphic Design and an MBA with a concentration in Marketing and Management. She also completed an artist residency in Noyers, France, and is a Juried Artist Member in Studio Art Quilt Associates where she previously served on the board of directors.
