Communities In Schools “What We Are Made Of” Mosaic Art Exhibit

On display: January 23 - 31, 2019 at Touchstone Gallery, Washington, DC

Touchstone Gallery is excited to announce “What We Are Made Of” exhibition by Communities In Schools (CIS). The exhibition will ask audiences to look closer and listen harder to our nation’s students who are thriving in the face of significant challenges ranging from school violence to problems at home to hunger.

This exhibit launches a yearlong campaign, “What We Are Made Of,” that focuses on the powerful stories within every student. Through the art exhibit, the campaign will take a deeper look at seven students and showcase their individual journeys through school and highlight the communities of support that have played a role in their success.

Featuring the work of renowned pop artist Jason Mecier, each mosaic portrait is assembled with objects from the student’s life to represent who they are as individuals as well as the life and school supports that empowered them to succeed.  This vibrant collection includes portraits of seven students from across the country. Their stories represent a multidimensional view of the challenges and triumphs students across America experience every day.

“Too many of today’s youth are painted in broad strokes, often labeled as so-called problems to be dealt with. As a result, their potential goes unrealized,” said Communities In Schools President & CEO Dale Erquiaga. “‘What We Are Made Of’ will demonstrate that when we take a closer look at this generation—when we go beyond labels and really examine the social and emotional factors that make these young people who they are—we begin to understand the richer story today’s students have to tell.”
