ANNE STINE
About the Artist
Anne Stine is best known for her encaustic mixed media paintings that reflect an intimate, human connection with the natural world. Her work is inspired by her deep passion for the essence of nature – its geometry, patterns, colors and textures. It’s this deep personal connection and the childlike wonder of our natural world that Anne shares with others in her landscape and abstract work. She uses encaustic paint (beeswax mixed with damar resin), and mixed media to explore common themes we share with nature like resilience, community, and memory of place.
Anne's process involves using a blowtorch to fuse each layer of encaustic paint to a wood panel, then carving, scraping, and melting the wax into semi-abstract representations of natural scenery. Her latest collection of waterscapes, titled River’s Journey invites the viewer to plunge into the layers of mixed media hidden beneath the wax surfaces as a personal exploration of feelings and memories and what it means to them and their own journey in life. There are several paintings in this collection that represent local scenery in the Washington Metro area.
Anne’s love of encaustic painting began in 2016, when she discovered the medium’s ability to add a lush luminescent quality and tactile texture to her nature-themed paintings. Her work can be found in international solo and group exhibits, as well as public and private collections around the world, including the permanent collection of the Encaustic Museum of Art in New Mexico. Anne resides and teaches encaustic painting in Purcellville, VA.
Her first solo exhibition at Touchstone Gallery was Call for Sweet Water (November 2024).
