"If You Don’t Do Anything, Nothing Changes" - Inspired by Newton’s First Law of Motion

Watercolor

Sir Isaac Newton had one of the greatest minds not only of the scientific revolution but of science and mathematics, period. His work on calculus, light and color was revolutionary, but many people know him best for his three laws of motion and the law of universal gravity, put forth in Principia Mathematica Philosophiae Naturalis, published in 1687.

The first law of motion, also known as the law of inertia, states that a body at rest tends to stay at rest, and a body in motion tends to stay in motion, unless interfered with by an outside force. This soldier will stand at rest until told to do otherwise while the stars trace the rotation of the earth in the night sky. Newton’s work refined previous observations by Galileo and others, which he credited.
