“Pictures of Nothing” Paintings by McCain McMurray
Once used to describe the atmospheric work of J.M.W. Turner, ‘pictures of nothing’, reflects a common expectation that one sees a recognizable image in a work of art. My work, on the other hand, is an attempt to abstract those images to generate an evocation of a place, experience or memory for the viewer.

THE ONE HOUSE PROJECT. 220 artists stand up for tolerance, inclusion and unity

THE ONE HOUSE PROJECT
220 artists stand up for tolerance, inclusion and unity

A project of the ArtWatch collective
Led by Ellyn Weiss and Jackie Hoysted
Exhibition supported by the Touchstone Foundation for the Arts

Over 220 DC area artists have come together to demonstrate the power of visual communication to support true democratic values of tolerance, inclusion and openness and to resist efforts to divide us by race, gender, sexual preference, class or region. The vision of OneHouse is for a country where we stand together.  Each artist contributed a 12” square panel dedicated to an ancestor who came to this country -  voluntarily or involuntary - or was here before the arrival of the Europeans. A structure erected in the Touchstone Gallery will be covered entirely by those panels, representing the remarkable range of diverse humanity who have combined to make the strength of America.

beg borrow + steal: works on cardboard by dana brotman
In this series, I continue to paint portraits, only now I paint them on old delivery boxes, food cartons, and even over other artists' works. Some of my images are conjured up in my head while others are stolen from people I have encountered, photos I have seen, and even other artists' paintings. In this way, I play with the ideas of inspiration, influence and originality.

“Both science and art have to do with ordered complexity.” – L. L. Whyte, 1957
A lively discussion of Pi Day (March 14, based on π’s value of 3.141592…) inspired Patricia Williams to create works that seek to translate mathematical and scientific principles into paintings that express the essence of a concept. Whimsical and colorful, the paintings integrate the artist’s lifelong fascination with science, math and creativity in all its forms.

Touchstone artists focus on harmony in their work. Working with constancy of purpose they sculpt, paint, photograph, make collage, form clay, or hand pull their prints into harmonious creations. Look for accord and wholeness within each composition whether the focus is color, human relationships, social issues, mathematical oneness, linear qualities, or repetition of design elements. What often eludes society, artists do capture their work.
