Nancy Novick’s forty 12’ x 12’ paintings in her “Wish You Were Here” exhibit reflect the character of recently visited places and meaningful events. Using the language of her earlier body of work, particularly her exploration of the square, she adds a new element of collage. She revisits her ephemera, adding bits of maps, menus and tickets to create a whimsical yet personal “postcard” of each place.
Each canvas holds a quiet, ordered beauty. She engages in a constant practice of making decisions, editing and finding balance. Shapes, lines and spatial intervals are always a consideration. Her process of adding, subtracting, layering and marking gives each painting a rich history of its own.
