JANET WHEELER

ABOUT ARTIST

The influences in Janet Wheeler’s work have resulted from her interest in the artifacts of ancient cultures, especially those of the Americas and the desert Southwest. Using painted handmade papers, various mixed media and wood, she creates collages which evoke ancient ritual objects. The TOTEMS are part of a continuing series of ceremonial pieces. They suggest shaman figures, iconic devices, and heraldic emblems and standards. These works do not borrow directly from historical pieces, but provide a starting point to explore the core human ceremonial requirement.

Janet Wheeler received her BA from Stanford University and studied at both Cornell and the Corcoran School of Art. She is a past Maryland State Arts Council grant recipient and is represented by Touchstone Gallery in Washington , DC and Gallery East in Loveland , CO . She has had numerous exhibitions and her artwork can be found in private and vcorporate collections around the United States .
