SHELLEY MOSKOWITZ LOWENSTEIN

Artist Statement

I have always been a people watcher.

I am fascinated by gesture, body language, interaction.
And I love to make up stories about the people I watch.
That’s what my figurative paintings are about: a moment in time, a little story, a vignette that hits the pause button on the hustle of everyday life.

I usually start with a drawing, fleshing out the elements of gesture and composition, and continuously simplifying.  When I jump to canvas, I draw upon some paintbox tools:  vivid color, bright highlights, long shadows and painterly brush strokes.  The end result: a painted story.
