Touchstone Gallery has been a prominent, artist-owned gallery since 1976. The gallery moved in 1996 to an elegant and spacious location at 7th and D Street, N.W. in downtown Washington. At this 3000-plus square-foot location, Touchstone is based in the heart of an active art scene, with several exhibition spaces in the immediate area and two other galleries in the 406 7th Street building itself.
Also, the gallery is a short walk from the recently renovated and reopened National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian American Art Museum, National Gallery of Art, International Spy Museum and Shakespeare Theatre.
Touchstone Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday and has an average of 400 visitors each month.
The gallery maintains an active membership of 30 to 35 artists. This number provides a diversity of artistic expression and personalities, yet allows ample exhibition space for each artist.
All Touchstone artists exhibit at least one piece at all times in our Members' Gallery. This member group show is changed every other month. Full members are entitled to a solo show during their second year of active membership and every other year thereafter. These shows are exhibited in our main gallery, approximately 8 months out of each year. Two solo shows are presented simultaneously during these months. During the remaining months we host juried shows, special exhibits and two member group shows in the main gallery.
We encourage artistic and career growth in our members and have a reputation for exhibiting contemporary work of high quality, vision and innovation. As member/owners of a co-op, Touchstone artists enjoy the right to guide gallery policies and control their exhibitions. The support and camaraderie of the membership is an additional benefit.
